If a child is not progressing with reading and visual stress is suspected, it is important to "cover all the bases" if there is no response to a single overlay or reading ruler. A combination of two tints may be what is required, or, as the following case study shows, the deeper tint that comes from doubling up two overlays of the same colour.


Case study: Boy, 6:

Eyes tested - normal, no spectacles needed. Some absences from school with headaches, and at the time was making very little if any progress towards learning at "letters and sounds phase 2" (e.g. 3 letter CVC words), only being able to read/spell these in Wordshark, not in books. (Wordshark uses coloured backgrounds.)

The child was given a full visual stress assessment. Single overlays appeared to make no difference, but when he was given a double sky blue he sat back and said "Oh! Is THAT what you mean by a word? Can I start learning to read now?"

One year on, using overlays for much (not all) of his reading work, progress was no longer a concern, and he was reading at an age-appropriate level. Headaches were much diminished and appeared to be associated with periods when overlays were NOT used.
